Banking over the
years has evolved from just pen and paper to an easier and faster digital
platform. The digital platform or e-banking has brought along with it terms
such as Personal Identification Number (PIN) and Passwords as these are
required for a more secured banking.
With e-banking comes
some security challenges like the need to safeguard your PIN. Choosing PINs can
be very tricky as they are usually short and numerical in nature and can be
easily guessed if birthday or other important dates in one's life is used.
Tips on how you could
protect your account from scammers and protect your PIN are examined below:
1. Don’t
let your card out of your sight. Be careful when handling your card to avoid
misplacing it.
2. Avoid
choosing a PIN based on events or obvious searchable information that can be
accessed by public, such as birthday, mobile number, address, marriage date
etc.
3. Always
hide/cover your pin when entering it in at an ATM, Store or POS.
4. Avoid
giving your PIN to anyone.
5. Beware
of fraudulent emails that ask for your PIN. Don’t click on any of the link
provided on the email as this can result to your PIN being leaked.
6. Verify
the authenticity of a website or internet merchant before using your PIN for
online transactions or payments.
7. Never
record your PIN in your cell phone.
8. Observe
the ATM and its environs before using it. Scammers tend to stand close in order
to get the PIN and details they need.
9. Never
write your PIN on the body of your card.
1. Avoid
giving your pin and card to others in order to help you make a withdrawal,
resolve an issue or make payment.
